AFCON 2023: Drogba Wary of Eagles

Published

on

Drogba

Former Ivory Coast striker, Didier Drogba, is wary of the threat the Super Eagles will pose to the chances of Elephants in Group A when the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations kicks off in January 2024, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

The Elephants are hoping to win their third AFCON title after emerging champions in 1992 and 2015 while Nigeria buoyed by the reigning African Footballer of The Year, Victor Osimhen will aim to lift their fourth in history.

Hosts Ivory Coast are drawn in Group A against three-time winners Nigeria, Equatorial Guinea and Guinea-Bissau.

Drogba, who featured at five AFCON tournament editions and led the Ivoirians to the final in 2012 when they lost 8-7 on penalties to Zambia after extra time ended goalless, expects a very difficult group for the hosts.

“There’s no such thing as a generous draw because all the teams deserve to be here and they’re going to fight,” Drogba, who scored 65 goals for the Elephants told the BBC.

“Nigeria, with Victor Osimhen and all the players they have, is a big team. We mustn’t forget the other two teams because there are always surprises.

“I think that our main asset will be to focus on our game, our team, our strengths and try to progress. It’s up to us to make the most of it, get behind our team and make sure the trophy stays at home.”

The Eagles last won the AFCON 10 years ago in South Africa and they defeated Ivory Coast in the quarter-finals on the way to that triumph in 2013.

Meanwhile, Eagles’ coach, Jose Peseiro, remains upbeat about the chances of his side, ahead of the forthcoming 2023 AFCON.

Speaking , the Portuguese coach, said, “We want to win the AFCON, so it’s not important to choose or want to avoid any opponent.

“The best moments are all those I was and I’m with my players, working to improve our organisation and our team spirit.”

Senegal Vs Cameroon: AFCON 2023 Today At 6pm

Reigning champions Senegal will square off against Cameroon at the Charles Konan Banny Stadium in their second group-stage match of the Africa Cup of Nations 2023 (AFCON) on Friday.

The 2021 winners got their title defense underway with a comfortable 3-0 win over the Gambia. Pape Gueye broke the deadlock in the fourth minute with Sadio Mane providing the assist.

The Gambia’s Ebou Adams was sent off in the first half, after a VAR check, which overturned the original decision from a yellow card to a red card. The reigning champions made the most of their numerical advantage and Lamine Camara bagged a brace in the second half.

Cameroon, the five-time champions at the AFCON, finished third in the previous edition but had a slow start to their campaign playing a 1-1 draw against Guinea. Mohamed Bayo opened the scoring in the 10th minute to give Guinea an early lead but François Kamano was sent off in the first half, reducing them to 10 men for the second half.

The numerical advantage came in hand for the 2017 champions as Frank Magri equalized in the 51st minute with Georges-Kévin N’Koudou bagging the assist.

Guelor Kanga, Gabon Player, Who Was Born Few Years After His Mother’s Death

Guelor Kamga

Africa football governing body, Confederation of Africa Football, CAF has launched investigation over age manipulation by a Gabonese player who declared that he was born in 1990 but report indicates variance in his age claims.

Guelor Kanga said he was born in 1990 but it has emerged that his mother reportedly died in 1985 thereby throwing his age claim in doubt.

Consequently, Kanga, is currently under investigation for an alleged identity fraud after discovering that the “32 -year old” who claimed he was born in 1990 reportedly lost his mum in 1985 (36 years ago).

Guélor Kanga is a professional footballer who plays as an attacking midfielder for Red Star Belgrade and the Gabon national team.

Kanga who is originally from Congo was petitioned by CAF after the Congolese Football Federation (FECOFA) launched a complaint against Gabon for fielding in a player who frauded his identity.
FECOFA believes that Guelor Kamga whose current passport shows he was born on September 1, 1990 in Oyem, is in fact Kiaku Kiaku Kiangana who was born on October 5, 1985 in Kinshasa, DRC.

The Congolese are convinced the Res Belgrade star forged his identity when he arrived at the Gabonese second division club GBI.

According to them, there is no way the player would have been born in 1990 if his mother died in 1985 unless she resurrected and gave birth to him, which is clearly not possible.

If the player is found guilty, the Gabonese Football Federation could be charged with forgery concerning the administrative documents presented by its player and non-compliance with the FIFA procedure relating to his change of sporting nationality, when he moved from Congo to Gabon.

I won’t be surprised if Super Eagles fail to perform

A former Super Falcons coach, Godwin Izilein, has said that he would not be surprised if the Super Eagles failed to perform in the Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON, tournament coming up in Cote d’Ivoire. As monitored by daily Trust.

Izilein who stated this in an interview with newsmen in Calabar, described the Eagles’ preparations as shoddy.

He also described as “undeserving” some of the players the team handlers invited for the tournament.
“Personally, with the calibre of some of the players invited and the nature of their preparation for the tournament, it will not surprise me if Nigeria fails to do well.

“Preparation and pre-tournament matches should have been grade A, but with what am seeing now, I am convinced that we are truly not ready for the coveted trophy that has eluded us for 11 years now.

“If anything good comes out, it will be cheering news,” he stated.

DAILY POST reports that Nigeria is grouped with the host country, Cote d’Ivoire, alongside Equatorial Guinea and Guinea-Bissau.

The Super Eagles will kick-off their group matches on January 14 against Equatorial Guinea.
